OAAA's K–12 Initiatives are designed to support Black students across New Mexico with the tools, resources, and opportunities needed to succeed academically and build confidence early in their educational journey. Through partnerships with schools, community organizations, and families, we provide programs focused on literacy, cultural awareness, mentorship, and career exposure.
These initiatives are critical in helping address opportunity gaps that have historically impacted Black students, ensuring they are seen, supported, and positioned for long-term success both inside and outside the classroom.
It Starts With Me
It Starts With Me is a statewide literacy initiative led by OAAA that focuses on improving early reading outcomes for Pre-K through 5th grade students. The program empowers educators and families with tools, resources, and culturally relevant materials to support literacy development both in the classroom and at home. By strengthening foundational reading skills early, the initiative helps set students, particularly within the Black community in New Mexico on a path toward long-term academic success and opportunity.
Race Amity Project
The Race Amity Project is a community-based initiative focused on bringing people of different racial and cultural backgrounds together through dialogue, education, and shared experiences. It promotes understanding and unity by hosting events like the Race Amity Festival, school presentations, and community activities that encourage conversation, collaboration, and relationship-building.
High School Trades & Career Fair
OAAA High School Trades & Career Fair is an OAAA-led initiative designed to expose students to high-demand career pathways, including skilled trades, entrepreneurship, and emerging industries. Through interactive vendor booths, presentations, and direct engagement with professionals, students gain real-world insight into career options, workforce expectations, and opportunities available after graduation.
