Pillars
Public policy plays a critical role in shaping educational outcomes, economic opportunity, health access, public safety, and overall quality of life. The Office of African American Affairs works to ensure that the perspectives, experiences, and priorities of African American communities are represented in conversations that influence decisions at the local, state, and federal levels.
OAAA serves as a bridge between communities and policymakers by identifying emerging issues, elevating community concerns, facilitating dialogue, and supporting informed decision-making. Through research, public engagement, partnerships, and collaboration with elected officials, state agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations, the agency works to advance policies that promote equity, opportunity, and meaningful inclusion.
The agency also provides a platform for community voices to be heard through public forums, listening sessions, advisory groups, legislative engagement, and collaborative initiatives. By bringing together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, OAAA helps identify solutions that strengthen communities while addressing barriers that may disproportionately impact African American New Mexicans.
Effective advocacy requires both community participation and strong partnerships. OAAA works to educate residents about issues affecting their communities, connect leaders and organizations with opportunities for engagement, and support efforts that encourage civic participation, public awareness, and constructive dialogue around important policy issues throughout New Mexico.
