Education remains one of the most powerful pathways to opportunity, economic mobility, leadership development, and lifelong success. The Office of African American Affairs works to support educational environments where African American students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally from early childhood through higher education and career preparation.

Across New Mexico, African American students face unique challenges that can affect educational outcomes, access to opportunities, school engagement, and long-term success. OAAA works with educators, school districts, charter schools, higher education institutions, community organizations, families, and students to identify barriers and develop solutions that promote achievement and belonging.

The agency supports initiatives that strengthen student achievement, increase access to advanced coursework, expand mentoring opportunities, promote culturally responsive education, and improve pathways to college, careers, entrepreneurship, and public service. Through partnerships and advocacy, OAAA helps elevate student voices while encouraging policies and practices that foster equity and opportunity.

OAAA also supports leadership development programs that help students build confidence, civic awareness, professional skills, and community connections. These efforts are designed to prepare the next generation of leaders while strengthening educational outcomes throughout the state.
