Pillars
Health and wellness are essential components of strong families and thriving communities. The Office of African American Affairs works to address health disparities while promoting access to quality healthcare, preventive services, education, and resources that improve overall well-being.
African American communities continue to experience disproportionate impacts from a range of health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, maternal health concerns, mental health challenges, and barriers to healthcare access. OAAA collaborates with healthcare providers, public health agencies, educational institutions, nonprofits, and community organizations to advance awareness and support effective solutions.
The agency works to promote preventive care, health education, community outreach, and culturally responsive approaches that improve outcomes and strengthen trust between communities and healthcare systems. Through partnerships and public engagement efforts, OAAA helps ensure that health equity remains a priority in policy discussions and community initiatives.
OAAA also recognizes that health is influenced by factors beyond medical care alone. Economic stability, education, housing, transportation, food security, environmental conditions, and access to information all contribute to community health and quality of life. Addressing these broader factors is essential to achieving lasting progress.
